ICD-11 (International Classification of Diseases, Eleventh Revision) received endorsement from the World Health Assembly in May 2019 and officially came into effect on January 1, 2022. Developed by the World Health Organization (WHO), ICD-11 contains improvements and updates to better reflect advances in information technologies, medical knowledge and health care practices.
Member states of the WHO will make their own decisions regarding adoption and timing of implementation. A decision is yet to be made regarding the adoption of ICD-11 for health system use in Canada. In the meantime, CIHI is coordinating and conducting ICD-11 impact assessment activities to inform the decision-making process and facilitate planning for the transition to ICD-11.
