Update: Capturing COVID-19–related diagnoses in the NRS

To accommodate the grouping of emergency use diagnosis codes designated by the World Health Organization for confirmed COVID-19 cases, CIHI will be adding 3 more codes to the National Rehabilitation Reporting System (NRS). This bulletin provides direction on the use of the 3 new ICD-10-CA emergency use diagnosis codes.

The NRS will accept the following new codes for assessments dated on or after January 4, 2021:

  • U07.3 Multisystem inflammatory syndrome associated with COVID-19
  • U07.4 Post COVID-19 condition
  • U07.5 Personal history of COVID-19

Note: There is no change to the previous ICD-10-CA coding direction communicated in an earlier bulletin regarding the use of the following:

  • U07.1 COVID-19, virus identified
  • U07.2 COVID-19, virus not identified

New direction

  • Assign U07.3 Multisystem inflammatory syndrome associated with COVID-19 as diagnosis type, depending on the circumstances surrounding the episode of care. This includes cytokine storm, Kawasaki-like syndrome, paediatric inflammatory multisystem syndrome (PIMS) and multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C).
  • Assign U07.4 Post COVID-19 condition as a comorbid health condition when the physician/primary care provider has documented an established relationship between a specific condition and past COVID-19. Examples of documentation describing a post COVID-19 condition may include “post COVID-19 viral cough,” “post COVID-19 deconditioning” and “intermittent shortness of breath post COVID-19 infection.” This code is not valid for data element 80, Most Responsible Health Condition ICD-10-CA, as it qualifies as a comorbid health condition.
  • Assign U07.5 Personal history of COVID-19 as a comorbid health condition when there is documentation that the patient has a personal history of COVID-19 (confirmed or suspected). This code is not valid for data element 80, Most Responsible Health Condition ICD-10-CA.

If these ICD-10-CA codes are not available through your vendor software, assign ICD-10-CA code U07.1 COVID-19, virus identified or U07.2 COVID-19, virus not identified, as appropriate.
